Clover and the ball of twine! |
Apparently there is another ball of twine somewhere else that competes with this one, so that's why it's know as the World's Largest Ball of Sisal Twine. We arrived late in the day, but if the hardware store was open, you could buy twine there and add to the ball! Pretty cool!
We loved stopping at this adorable roadside attraction, but the fun didn't stop there.
Fun Twine Facts! |
Just as we were getting ready to leave, I saw some policemen setting up orange cones and asked what was going on. They told me that the parade was getting ready to start. How serendipitous!
I begged my daughter to stay and we found a place on some wooden picnic tables that were placed on the route for spectators to enjoy.
People came from all over to see the parade! |
We felt a little self-conscious as we waited for the parade to start because it seemed like everyone knew everyone else, but the joy of spending time at such a quaint small town event outweighed our awkwardness. Once the parade got started it was all worth it.
Fire trucks, pickups and American Flags attracted kids as they waited for candy to be tossed out of vehicles. |
How much wholesome fun is this!? |
My daughter overlooking the crowd. |
This was one of those days that I'll never forget. And I'm so grateful to the kind people of Cawker City to share their parade with two travelers from far away.
To go to the website for the Ball of Twine click HERE. They have some of their activities listed on their town website HERE too.
I know the chances of seeing a parade in Cawker City is super rare. We happened to be there on August 17, and if you can plan a trip around the parade it's such a joy, but the Ball of Twine alone is definitely worth the trip!
